Healthy Foods to Manage Ulcerative Colitis Symptoms

Do you have Ulcerative Colitis and are interested in managing the disease? Then changing your diet to increase the intake of Ulcerative Colitis friendly foods is a smart choice. Eating certain foods will not cure the disease, but it can help manage the symptoms. In particular, it can reduce the levels of inflammation in your digestive tract. Here are a few dietary suggestions to consider:

  • Salmon: with the levels of omega 3 fatty acids it contains it’s no secret that salmon is healthy. However, the University of Maryland Medical Center says these essential fatty acids can help reduce inflammation. Other omega 3 sources to consider are ground flaxseed, walnuts, and albacore tuna.

  • Probiotics: Fermented foods are rich in probiotics, which are great for managing Ulcerative Colitis symptoms. As Lisa Cimperman, MS, RDN, LD, a clinical dietitian at University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland says, “Eating foods that contain live and active cultures can help maintain optimal levels of good bacteria in our gastrointestinal tract,”

  • Eggs: if your Ulcerative Colitis diet is lacking in nutrients then eggs might be the solution. They contain high levels of protein and are well tolerated by the digestive tract – even if there is a flare up. The great thing about eggs is they can be enjoyed in a variety of ways: poached, scrambled, fried or boiled.
