The Best Diet for a Healthy Colon
Diet has an effect on our entire internal microbiome, from our heart to our brain all of our organs are impacted by what we are putting into our bodies. The colon is especially susceptible to the good or bad we are digesting.
As an integral organ in our digestive system, the colon’s function is to reabsorb fluid and facilitate the waste process as it is the final step in digestion. It is a part of the large bowel or large intestine and allows us to eat and fuel our bodies. When there is an issue in the colon it can cause a host of symptoms and conditions including Leaky Gut Syndrome, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s Disease, IBS, diverticular disease and colorectal cancer.
In order to have a healthy colon, a healthy diet is critical. We have compiled the best diet suggestions for a healthy colon.
Following the do’s and don’ts of a healthy diet
Do eat things like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Don’t eat too much red meat or processed meat. Do drink a lot of water but don’t overdo beverages like caffeinated beverages, drinks with high sugar amounts and don’t over-do alcohol consumption.
Here are some of our favorite food items and items to avoid in order to have a healthy colon and nutrient-rich diet:
- Avoid excessive amounts of red meat and processed meat – The American Cancer Society has reported that 100 grams or more of meat consumption results in an increased chance of colon cancer by 15-20%. 50 grams of processed meat like hot dogs and sausage show the same increase in potential colon cancer as well. A bit of red meat is okay, but avoid excessive amounts during the week.
- Choose into food with small amounts of sugar – We all love a good dessert, but too much sugar is bad for the colon. Diets that are high in sugar and low in fiber an result in Crohn’s disease or other issues related to the bowel. Although studies haven’t shown a direct correlation between sugar and colon cancer, there is a link between obesity and issues with the colon. Often food high in sugar has a higher calorie count and leads to obesity.
- Increase your daily fiber – A high fiber diet is a great decision whether you are fighting off colon issues or simply adjusting to a better, well-rounded diet. On average American men and women aren’t getting the required amounts of fiber we need. In fact, Americans average around 13 grams of fiber when it is suggested that 25-35 grams are consumed every day. To get your fiber in, eat more whole grains and legumes!
- Get enough calcium and vitamin D every day! Not only will your bones be stronger, but your rate of colorectal cancer is also significantly decreased. If milk isn’t your thing, make sure you are choosing into eating 1,000-1,300 milligrams of calcium from dairy milk, almond milk and dark leafy greens.
- Not all grains are created equal – Whole grains have more nutrient-rich components than white bread or bleached flour. Include these whole grains into your diet and improve your colon health: quinoa, brown rice, wild rice, steel cut oats and barley.
Make sure you are getting checked regularly with your physician
Regular check-ups should be routine for any adult male or female. Just as check-ups are critical in determining the health of your children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, check-ups monthly or yearly should be a part of your routine. As we age, so do our bodies, and it is important to call and schedule an appointment with your physician to get physicals, blood work or just to get a rundown on what to expect at any age or stage of your life.
