5 Food Swaps That Can Relieve Acid Reflux

Acid reflux is a digestive disorder that occurs when stomach acid or bile irritates the food pipe, causing heartburn and indigestion. This typically happens when the body is unable to properly digest certain foods because of the inability of the Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES) to close after food has entered the digestive system. The Lower Esophageal Sphincter is a ring-like muscle that is supposed to act like a valve at the top of the stomach and for some it doesn’t close once food has entered the stomach. This causes the stomach acid to make its way back up the throat instead of aiding digestion. However, switching to an acid reflux diet can help to reduce your symptoms.

If  you suffer from acid reflux, you know very well how uncomfortable the symptoms can be. At A.M.P. Floracel®, we recommend healthy and natural alternatives to treat digestive disorders. One way that you can combat acid reflux is by substituting certain foods for other stomach-friendly options. We have provided a list of five dietary swaps that will help you relieve your discomfort.

1.Switch From Caffeine to Water or Herbal Tea

Caffeinated beverages of any kind are one of the main culprits of acid reflux. They cause acidity in the stomach, which typically leads to indigestion. Water and herbal tea, on the other hand, naturally relieve digestion and alkalizes the stomach.

2. Switch From Chocolate to Carob Powder

Who would’ve thought that chocolate could trigger acid reflux? Chocolate, surprisingly, is very acidic and high in fat. If you love chocolate, despite your acid reflux, we recommend that you swap it out for carob powder. Carob powder is Dutch-processed cocoa that is more alkalized than acidic.

3. Switch From Tomato Soup to Fresh Vegetable Soup

Raw tomatoes are extremely acidic, and many who suffer from acid reflux can barely tolerate them. Instead of sipping on tomato-based soups, try substituting them for vegetable-based soup instead. Green vegetables have a tendency to naturally counter acidity.

4. Switch From Fried to Baked

Fried food is extremely high in fat and another main contributor to acid reflux. Baked food is the healthiest option that has the same ability as fried food to make any meal taste delicious and a welcome addition to an acid reflux diet!

5. Switch From High-Fat Dairy Products to Plant-Based Options

Dairy products are infamous contributors to acid reflux, heartburn and indigestion. Switching to plant-based products, such as almond milk, coconut yogurt and soy yogurt, will benefit your digestive system because they consist of reduced amounts of unhealthy fat and are easier to digest.
